I'm so glad you're here around the virtual campfire with us today. So take a seat, straight your legs out toward the warmth, and let the pressure of the day fall away into the dark, shall we. Now? In this week's episode of Why Thoughts, we're talking about a heavy backpack many of us carry without even realizing it. It's packed with societal clocks, unspoken rules, and arbitrary deadlines for where we should. As I air quote that be in life by now. Well, today we're laying that backpack down by the fire. You know a lot of people say, well, by age twenty five you should have your career figured out. By thirty you should own a home or settle down, and by forty you should be at the peak of your success. Let me ask you something, who wrote these rules? And why? Why? Why? Why do we measure our worth against a timeline we didn't even choose. You know, when we live by invisible timelines, life becomes a race with the finish line, well, it keeps moving. We look around at others in social media, we're in our peers lives and assume we're running behind we start treating our present moment not as a place to live, but as a waiting room for the next milestone. But you know someting. Here's the truth. Nature doesn't operate on a single clock. The sunflower doesn't compare its bloom to an oak tree, and an oak tree takes decades to grow strong enough to withstand storms. Your life is not a standardized test, my friends, it's an ecosystem. Releasing these timelines isn't giving up, okay, what it's doing. It's it's stepping into reality. Here's how we loosen the grip of unspoken expectations. Number One, audit your shoulds. I always and I heard this from somewhere else. You shouldn't should all over yourself s h o u lds. Audit your shoulds. Whenever you feel panic or shame about your progress, ask is this my desire? Or am I trying to satisfy someone else's timeline? Then what you. Do name the expectation? Often simply shining light on it dilutes its power. Second thing, reframe detours as depth the unexpected urns. Late starts and career pivots aren't wasted times. They're not They are where character is built, where perspective deepens, and where original ideas are born. Einstein failed hundreds and hundreds of times throughout his life, So did Elon Musk, so did Bill Gates, so did Steve Jobs. Many of the people we put on a pedestal in society and throughout history and history of the world failed hundreds of times. But you know what, they never gave up. Number three, Celebrate current seasons. Winter isn't failing because it isn't summer. If you are in a season of learning, resting, or rebuilding, honor it. Don't rush a season of planting just to force an early harvest. Okay, enjoy the journey, Enjoy the now. Enjoy the enlightenment and the lessons that you are learning and the knowledge that you are gaining. You know, as our virtual campfire crackles softly, let this truth sink in. You are not behind. You are exactly where your journey needs you to be. Right now, let me say that again. You're not behind. You are exactly where your journey needs you to be rate at this particular moment in time. Trust your timing, protect your peace, and give yourself permission to live a life that feels authentic. To you rather than one that looks impressive on paper. We have to stop comparing ourselves to the media expectations of us, to our family's expectations, to our friends and peers, to our coworkers. You know, I look at society now, and I look and I see it. And again, this is not to disparage anyone with mental health concerns and things of that nature, but I see, you know, there's a record number of people, especially especially in the United States of America, on anti anxiety medication ADHD medication, tranquilizers, mood altering pharmaceutical drugs. Why think about this? Why do you ever think it might be the unrealistic expectations we're putting on ourselves, the societal pressure that we're trying to live up to. Oh, I've got to have a degree, or I've got to have a job that pays one hundred thousand dollars a year, I've got to have two cars in a summer home, or if not, I'm just not anybody. And social media, my friends, has only, in my humble opinion, accelerated this fact. Social media, and I've done many podcast episodes on this in the past. It has some good uses but mostly it has become a dumpster fire, a trash talking dumpster fire where people just put people down. And you know, when you go on social media, let me say this, you know, you see all these postings of certain individuals. Look at my perfect life, Look at my perfect husband, my perfect wife, boyfriend girlfriend, my perfect job, my perfect home, my perfect vacation. Yeah, most of those people are showing you the best. They're not showing you the bad days. They're not showing you the days of struggle, the days of where intestinal fortitude was built, where how many times they've failed? Okay. The term social media influencer, I think is it's garbage to me. Okay, And if your social media influencer, way, good for you. But there's so much programming going on in our minds in these days with this technology, and my humble opinion this is again just my humble opinion. Be yourself, be your true, authentic self. Don't follow the crowd, don't follow the fad, don't follow the thing of the moment. You have to be true to your self because if you're not, no one's gonna come and hitch you over the head and say, hey, they'll gladly steer you and let you run off the road and go off the cliff long as you're buying their products, taking their courses, attending their seminars and webinars, buying the next it thing. But you have to be true to your authentic self. Like we said, the unexpected terms, the late starts, the career privots, they're not wasted time. These are the seasons and the times in your life where character is built and perspective deepens, where you truly find who you are. I still go through these many times throughout the year, but I've learned to embrace the journey. I've learned to understand that, hey, I'm cool with me, I'm okay where I'm at, and I'm always learning. I know a lot, I know how to do a lot of things. I'm really good at a lot of things. But I am always open to learning more, to exploring more, to discovering more and listening to other people, entertaining different points of view and really meditating on it and trying to understand it. No one knows everything. And these people, again referring back to social media, that you think have it all together, what happens to a lot of them? Unfortunately, many of them meet a tragic end, whether it's with the law, addiction, mental illness, what have you. And that's terrible, It really is because of the societal pressure to be this, be that, be this. It's hard enough just being a decent human being. But you want to be the best that you that you can be. I'll have some closing thoughts in just a second. Hey was waste thoughts to listeners? Welcome to Wie Thought Sumitary Lines. I'm so glad we decided to spend some of your valuable time here with me today. And in this episode of the podcast, we're talking about the unspoken expectations, releasing invisible timelines and how can help your mental health, your overall happiness with your life and basically make your life not so miserable. Right, not so miserable? We don't want that. That's always a good thing when your life is not so miserable. But before the break, we were talking about, you know, not living according to anyone else's timeline of when you should get married, when you should have a career, you know, where you should be at in your life, and not following you know, some of these knuckleheads on social media, these social media influencers. Oh you got to have this shirt, you got to talk this way, walk this way. You know, you got to be this way there, you got to look like this and act like this, have this type of job, what have you? You know, And we talked about detours as depth, really helping you to perceive, you know, ideas and really take stock of your life and where character is built, you know, and enjoying the current season of your life that you're in. You want to protect your piece and you want to give yourself permission to live a life that feels authentic to you rather than one that looks impressive on paper into other people. I mean, you're not out. You're not about to impress anybody, you know, I would hope not. I'm not. You've got to walk your own path and honor your piece and keep your own fire burning bright. That's what it's all about. We talked about, you know, my observation that an alarming number of people, especially in the United States of America, are on anti anxiety medication, you know, things to calm them down ADHD. All these things, all these pharmaceuticals and these pharmaceutical commercials on TV really don't help. I mean, I understand pharmaceutical intervention has a place in society for helping with disease and mental conditions and such. Absolutely, and it does a lot of good for a lot of people. I'm not discounting that, but I think marketing to the general public is a wrong thing to do. But it is a multi trillion dollar industry. Yes I said trillion with a T. It is okay, and I think it needs to go off of television. I mean it used to be you know, if you needed help or something for an enailment or some mental concerns, you would go to your doctor. They would be the ones to recommend, Hey, there's this, this, and this. They would tell you about it a little bit, you do it, a little bit of your own research. But you know, now you got you know, all these hip and cool drug commercials on TV. Everything from your head to your toes. They got a drug to get you covered. And it, like I said, folks, it is a billion slash trillion dollar a year a year industry. These pharmaceutical companies are making billions and trillions, and sometimes at the expense of us the general public, who are either naive or brainwashed or just don't give a shit one way or the other, I guess is another way to put it. And again I don't discount the fact that pharmaceuticals do play a role in modern society with prevent and helping these symptoms and helping cure things. Absolutely, I get it. I'm not a dummy, all right, I'm not one of these. Oh no, you never can take any kind of pharmacut I get it. Some people need them, some people need them short terms, people need them long term. But you know what, I bet there's a lot of people that don't need them. I bet you there's a good portion of the American population that honestly really don't need them, but they've been maybe psychologically brainwashed by the media with all these commercials that they do. Just my opinion, I could be totally way off base if I am. He you know, you can let me know. You can tell me, Hey, Terry, shut up, you're a knucklehead. Forget it. I get it. But just think about these things. Think about what we talked today on the program, the tyranny of your shoulds. Don't should all over yourself. Okay, you want to audit your shoulds whenever you feel panic or shame about your progress, again, restating the obvious. Is this your desire or are you trying to satisfy someone else's timeline? Really take stock of that, celebrate the current season of the life that you're in. Whether you're in a good point or maybe a not so good point in your life, but learn from it, learn from the highs and the lows. It's the adversity that makes us stronger, makes us appreciate the good times more and more. That's the important stuff. Trust your timing, protect your peace, and just again repeating, give yourself permission to live a life that feels authentic to you. You are the director of your own life's movie. You are in control of you.
