Ever feel like life just keeps throwing you pitches you weren’t prepared to hit? You aren’t alone. In this episode of Wyce Thoughts, I’m pulling up a chair by the virtual campfire to talk about the one skill that changes everything: Resilience.Resilience isn't just about "toughing it out" or ignoring the hard stuff—it’s about building the internal muscle to recover, adapt, and grow stronger when things get chaotic. Today, we’re cutting through the noise to discuss:
- The Pause Button: Why stepping away for five minutes can save you hours of unnecessary stress.
- Narrative Shifting: How to stop asking "Why is this happening to me?" and start asking "What is this trying to teach me?"
- The Power of Connection: Why you don't have to navigate the storm alone and how your community acts as your safety net.

You've planned the perfect getaway with family, friends, or that special someone, and then it ends up raining, or you're in the middle of that document you're halfway through, you've got a crunch, a deadline to meet for your boss or your supervisor, or a presentation you're making, and your computer crashes. Do you ever have one of those days or weeks? Well, resilience isn't about always succeeding, and it also isn't about never failing. It's about how fast you get back up. We're going to talk about it this time on White's Thoughts. It's time for a virtual campfire sit down with Terry Weiss. Welcome to Weiss Boss. Hey, everybody, welcome back to the podcast. Welcome to Wife's Thoughts. I am Terry Weiss. You're home, and I am so glad you decided to spend some of your valuable time with me today. Also, if you want to look for me on x I used to say, tweet at me on Twitter, but I don't know I keep I'm going to start a petition online elon bring back the name Twitter, get rid of Xwiya. So it's just so ingrained in our national psyche, worldwide psyche. We want the name Twitter back. Anyway, if you want to reach me on exits at Terry Weiss, and also you can look for me on YouTube, just search for Weis's thoughts on your favorite YouTube channel. All Right, anyway, we're gonna talk about today. We're gonna talk about resilience. And remember, resilience isn't about never failing. It's about how fast you get back up. Now, it's not a personality trait many are born with. It really isn't. It's actually a muscle that you build over time. Okay, and believe me, it takes a lot of practice and looking at society, especially some of the examples I've seen, and maybe I've just seen the worst examples out there. Maybe I'm not looking for the positive examples. But how many videos do you see and shorts and TikTok videos and YouTube shorts and things like that where somebody's trying to do something and it seems like it's the first time. Maybe they're doing it and they get frustrated and they ended up just you know, having a canip fit, as my grandparents used to call it, a conniption fit. I'm gonna have to look up exactly what that is, mister producer extraordinary. I am not sure what a conniption fit is. Somebody knows. Let me know what a conniption fit is. If you know what that is, please email me or let me know in the comments, and you can do that at the Wiste's Thoughts website. Go to Wiste's Thoughts dot com or Purplepitstudios dot com and in the comment section you can leave a comment there anyway. It's it. Do you notice that some people really lose their crap or lose their shit? I guess is the only way to say it. Something happens or kick in. Man, you got TV shows on called customer Wars where people just the littlest thing just sets them off and they end up just showing the worst of humanity. You know, but resilience isn't a personality trait that you're born with. It's a muscle that you have to build, you know. I mean you have to distinguish yourself between stoicism, which is ignoring feelings, and resilience acknowledging the difficulty but choosing to move forward. And you can apply this, folks, to every area of your life. Believe me, you know it's Resilience is not just toughening, you know, toughening it out, It isn't. Resilience is about having a proper mental mindset to say, you know what, I've got to set back, whether it's in your professional life, your personal life. You've made plans for something in your health. You want to lose weight and you get on the scale and you think, man, I've lost five pounds this week. And you come up and you go, oh crap, I've lost one. Really well, that's feedback, that's data, that's telling you, Okay, I got to tweak some things here or there. That's what it is. And having resilience, again, it's not just toughening it out and plowing your head down and going through. That's part of it. It's part of it. But resilience is about being tough and sticking to something and being willing to look at it from a different angle and solving you know, these inconveniences that come up in our lives. And there's great stories out there. You can find great inspiration of people that have that have done this. There are great stories and great inspiration out there. Absolutely there is. Okay, you just google it, you can find them. Don't be I employ you don't be one of the many that just gives up. Oh I want to lose twenty pounds. Oh I've been doing this for ten days and I've only lost a pound. Add a heck with it passed me the pan full of brownies. Don't don't be that person, please, I implore you. Don't do that. Got a squeaky chair in the studio, mister producer, story, Listen that chair scure, you've gotta get some three and one oil or something on it. Hopefully you didn't hear that, and we'll let it that out. It's squeaky chair in the studio here in purple Pit studios. To be a inn to be or not to be. But we have to be resilient as a society and it's going to help you in your everyday life, you know, And let me give you some Let me give you some tools that I found helpful. Okay, the pause button. Why stepping away for five minutes before reacting to bad news is crucial? How many times has somebody said something to you? Come on, we can all relate to this. Come on, somebody said something that really ticked you off and made you angry. What is our first gut reaction? Oh yeah, well I'll tell you. Eh, five minutes, step away mentally or even physically, just remove you. You know, somebody says something to you or whatever. Oh yeah, well you're a blah blah blah. What do you think? Take a pause, take a couple of deep breaths, and say, you know that it's really interesting that you should say things like that to me. I'm gonna have to think about that, and I'm gonna have to get back to you. You don't have to answer everything instantaneously, and not everything, my friends, deserves an answer, Not every question deserves an answer. Some things are not worth worth your peace. But that's what I call hitting the pause button, stepping away for five minutes before reacting to someone, maybe trying to insult you or get your goat as they say, or egg you on into a confrontation, or even just bad news overall, or any type of news is crucial. The second thing, try reframing the narrative, changing why is this happening to me? To what is this trying to teach me? Oh? Wow, that's powerful? Instead of why is this happening to me? Change it? Change it up to what is this trying to teach me? A powerful? Powerful statement? Start using that I don't know how many times, and I've done it, believe me, I and I still slip into it now I catch myself because again, resilience. Being resilient all right, is about mastering this art. It's not something that typically most people are born with. It's a muscle we build. How many people do you hear? Well? I don't know why this keeps happening to me. I don't know why people you hear it all the time? Change that, Change that narrative in your mind and your psyche in deep down in your soul to what is this trying to teach me? And I can speak from personal experience. It works. It takes practice, It takes repetition, It takes internal dialogue training. But my friends, it works. Another practical strategy community matters, a nod to the importance of having a supportive system. You don't have to carry the whole load alone. If you have some good friends, a partner, relatives, use them if you feel that they can offer some insight. Now, I'm not saying go to the biggest blabbermouth and you know in the neighborhood and tell them everything, because you know, you know, unless you want your news spread everywhere. But you know who in your circle you can trust. You know people that you hate. Can I bounce an idea? Can I bounce something off you? Or can I talk to you about something I've been feeling this way that way lately. Community can matter and it's big. Find someone you trust, find a good close friend, a close family member, or your partner. Use that support system. You don't have to go it alone. Well, I don't know exactly what to say after that introduction, Holy mackerel, Hey, everybody, welcome back to the program. Welcome to White's thoughts, and we are talking about thank you, mister producer extraordinary. I don't know about that promo people are going to start thinking really weird things about me. They haven't already, I guess. But anyway, welcome back, Welcome to Weis's Thoughts. I'm Terry Weis your host, and we're talking about resilience on today's program. And before we went to the break there we were talking about some examples I gave you about. You know, resilience is not just toughening it out, gave it. We were talking about some tips before the break on a resilience tool kit, things you can do like hitting the pause button, reframing the narrative, why community matters, and what I want to jump into now. By the way, if you like the show, you know, give us a rating and review, a positive rating and review on your local podcast provider. Shall you just look for White Thoughts wycee Wasice Thoughts and you can go to the website White Thoughts dot com. There. I did everything I was supposed to do, so stop yelling at me on over the earphones here, mister producer extraordinaire. Golly, I know, well, I want to talk now about the long game. Okay, how the concept of momentum, all right, Staying resilient it means being okay with slow progress. Okay, I mean we all have them. We all have challenges in our life. We all have things that we do, we need to do, we want to do. And if that goal is important enough, if that change in your life, you've got to assign and think and contemplate and reflect. How important is it to say, lose weight? How important is it to maybe be a little bit better off financially? You know, what can I do? You know, I've got x amount of commitments with my finances, my events, X amount of dollars coming in. What are some things I can do? Does it mean working more hours? Does it mean getting a side hustle? Does it mean tightening the belt on some things that really aren't necessities but society nowadays want you to think are necessities. You don't need it. Ladies and gentlemen. This is one of my biggest pet fee peeves. You do not need every streaming platform under the sun and have eight billion choices. We've cut down in the Wiite household on streaming platforms because a lot of them, honestly, we were paying the yearly fee forum or the monthly fee. I prefer to pay yearly. Supposedly because you get a little bit better deal. But that's how they lock you in. And a few of them we weren't. I mean, if we watched three things every three or four months on it, you're like, uh, why are we paying for this? Just to you know, it's like it's like buying a book. Let me give you this. I'm going to try and give you an example here. It's like buying a book and the story, the essential story is only three hundred and fifty pages, but you want to buy the same story and have it have five hundred pages just to have the extra pages just in case you want to write some stuff in there, and you're going to pay double for that same book, If that makes any sense. I mean, it's just take a look at it. The streaming services especially, I mean I've done past episodes of the podcast about how streaming services are ripping us off for the most part. You know, they were supposed. To be a. Savings to cable. Well now it looks like that script is flipped and you can look for episodes on that. You know, keep your hand out of my pocket, et cetera. There's other episodes. Just go to White Thoughts to commerce search your favorite podcast provider for waste thoughts. You can find those episodes and have a listen. But it's just you know, being resilient. You have to create momentum things you can do, you know, so if you want to you know, how we got started on that tangent that I went off on is you know, you're trying to save some money. You want to have more money, more discretionary income, more money for savings or putting aside for retirement or what have you look for ways to you know, tighten the budget a little bit. Now, I'm not saying you got to you know, have hot dog soup and you know, drink reconstituted, you know, noodles roaming off water and everything else, and eat just you know, hot dog and beans all day. But just cut back a little bit. Can you imagine, just let me throw this idea out here. Can you imagine if someone from let's say the eighteen seventies was teleported to today. Take someone from the eighteen seventies and tell report them the twenty twenty six at the time of the recording of this podcast here, transport them into this world. They would be like, first of all, overwhelmed by the technology. I would believe. But I think one of the things that would be strikingly apparent to that individual from the eighteen seventies would be the waste. These people grew their own food for the most part. For the most part, they lived on farms. They you know, they cities were starting to come around in that some people did live in some cities and things, but for the most part they were thankful to get maybe a couple good meals a day if that. And the gluttony. I think of humanity now, we're so used to just you know, snapping our fingers and we can uber eat something, you know, or door dash something, and we can eat whenever we want, how much we want. We and look and look at the population. Most of a good chunk, not all, but a good portion of the population, especially in the United States of America, is grossly overweight. The gluttony. So, you know, think about things you can do, especially you know, health related. If you're trying to lose weight, what can you do to adjust what can you do to keep that momentum going. Okay, I wanted to lose five pounds in the last ten days, I've only lost two. Well that's two pounds. You've lost. Keep going with that momentum, Keep going with it. There's something to be said for it. You have to be willing to be resilient. You have to practice resilience. You have to, again going back to the strategies, hit the pause button sometimes before reacting to bad news or getting news. Let's say something doesn't go your way or as planned. Or you know, you're trying to learn an instrument and you want to play a song and you can only play the first maybe minute of it. Well, it's a minute that you didn't know before. Use the momentum. Even small wins are still wins anyway you slice it. A small win is a win, and that's what you have to look at that. That's what you have to take away. You can do it. Being resilient isn't easy. That's why they call it resilience. It's not, though, just about toughening it out. It's about exercising that muscle and keep building. You don't have to ignore the feelings. You have to acknowledge the difficulty. But you have to choose to move forward and you have to use you know, if you don't know how to move forward in a certain situation, again, change that narrative instead of why is this happening to me? To what is this trying to teach me? Again? Refriend reference back to the community and why community matters A not of importance to having that support system. I think everyone has at least one person in their life that can reach out to that can give them encouragement and honest feedback. You can find it and keep building on the momentum. Staying resilient means being okay with slow progress and sometimes in certain days maybe no progress, but then you'll pick it up again in a day or two. Just want to leave you with this closing thought. Okay, life is short, and while we can't control the storms, we can choose how we sail our ships. Now go out there, have a great day, and if any of this has been helpful, please leave us a positive rating and review. Share us with your friends, your family, your pets, tell them about Why's thoughts. Until next time, my friends, be well. Hey, thanks for listening to the program today.
