Hey, everybody, welcome to the podcast. Wow, that's a quick thanks mister producer for that one. That was a quick man. You're out, You're out of here. That was a quick one. Welcome to the podcast. Everyone, Welcome to Wife's Thoughts. I'm Terry Weiss. You'r a humbled host, and hey, I'm so glad you decided to drop by today. Thank you very much. You're much appreciated. Got a question for you. Do you feel the need? How do I say this delicately? I don't want to hurt your feelings. Do you feel the need that you have to chime in? As my parents used to say, you have to chime in on everything. You have to give your opinion on everything that goes from in person conversations. I'm talking about that, I'm also talking about, you know, conversations on the intro net as well. Do you feel like you've got to, you know, chime in on everything? What do you think now? I want you to take a hard look at that or think about it for a second, because I have found myself wanting to give my opinion many, many, many times throughout my life, and times I still do on things that really don't require my opinion. It's almost you know, at times I get sometimes like oh oh wait oohh remember that. For those of you that are old enough to remember, there was a show called Welcome Back Cotter back in nineteen Oh gosh, I'm going to date myself, nineteen seventy five, seventy six era. It was called Welcome Back Cotter Gabe Kaplan, John Travolta. Do you know who John Travolta is? Okay? Well, it was about a group of kids called the Sweathogs. In today's world we probably call them the educationally challenged. They were just folks that were a little maybe just slow or just didn't care about learning or what have you. And Gabe Kaplan plays a teacher that went to that high school but then graduated, left and then came back. I believe it was set in New York City area. Anyway, the sweat Hogs as they called him themselves, and it wasn't derogatory. It was just you know, good pretend fun. There was a gentleman in there named Honored Horseshack. I'm Honored Horshack. That's a very poor impersonation. I know you're probably saying, Terry, stop. But anyway, his big thing was when he had something to say with He's like oh oh oh oh oh oh oh, and he put his hand up in the air. Anyway, do you find yourself, I know, a long way around to get to making a point, Terry. Do you find yourself having or wanting or the un believable irresist will urge to chime in with your opinion in any and all social social situations. Do you find it you just can't help yourself. I suffer from that at times. I do. I suffer from that quite quite often. And it's something it's something I'm working on. It is. It's something that you know, at times has caused problems in my life. I'm just gonna be honest with you, you know, and uh, it's just something that I think the world could use a little awakening or awareness in because especially especially in social media, and you're you're saying to yourself, Terry, what Terry, what's you know? What spurred this topic of discussion for the podcast today on white Thoughts. Why are you talking about this? I saw a great monologue from Bill Maher over the weekend and he was talking about everyone's ability, you know, inability to well he put it in not so nice words to shut the up, you know, and it really hit home with me. It got me really thinking. You know, he made some statements that not everything needs your opinion, you know, he went through especially he just torched those of us on social media who have a tendency to want to fight on social media, and you know, and then X with you know, a great I mean he I don't know if he writes it himself or he runs it by a team of writers, but it was very a very well written and insightful monologue. It definitely was, you know. And one thing that really stood out to me was when he put they put a graphic up on the screen and he says, you know, you're one of these people on social media and I'm paraphrasing what he said. Of course, sorry Bill, but he says, if you're one of these people on social media that has to take a topic of discussion that has nothing to do with you, it doesn't need commentary, and you screenshot the whole thread, and then you put a social media point, you know, a post up, and it said above it, you put this no and think about it. There's a lot of us out there, a lot, and I'm guilty of this because I've done it. But I'm not going to do it anymore because thank you Bill Maher for opening my eyes to my own stupidity and arrogance and ignorance. I appreciate you now. Sometimes you need someone just to pull you aside and say, hey, hey, you're being an asshole. You know. And it's just that third party perspective wake up call that I appreciate greatly. I greatly appreciated that that was it was needed, and I am grateful to that. You know, there's so much fighting us, especially especially social media these days. Too much fighting, too much. We need to go back. And I've said it on many variously various various See wow, I just invented a new word. Variously, the inability to focus on what you're thinking. You have various Please won't you take this pill for variously? I know there's such a word. Mister producer, stop laughing, mister producer. Extraord uh various things that just don't need commentary. I hope I'm back on the right train of thought here. It's early when I'm recording this, not usually in the studio this early, but it just it brought me to the reality that there are so many things that just don't need commentary. There are other things to do in life. And that's what I was saying on various episodes previous episodes of The Wife's Thought podcast, and you can go back on hunt them down at wiste Thoughts dot com or at Purplepitstudios dot com. Just look under the podcast section for Wife Thoughts. I talk about a need to just pull back and get back to, for lack of a better term, how things used to be. It's okay to talk, it's okay to be social, it's okay to engage. I get that, it certainly is. However, that being said, however, it's not okay to rage post and to interject ourselves into conversations and offer up opinions. It doesn't it. Everything doesn't need an opinion, Everything doesn't need our input. It's easy to just scroll by, to scroll by and say, you know what, this this really doesn't need my commentary. I don't need to comment on this, No, I don't. It's easy to do that and you can do it, folks. Believe me, I've been lulled into the same doom scrolling trap on social media that many of you out there probably have. And it's I don't know if it's the dopamine hit, if it's just the boredom or the anticipation of ooh, the next the next post will be something really interesting and insightful and maybe I'll learn something. Now, you want to watch something. I believe it's on Netflix. It's about social media, how they got us with these algorithms and CIA and I'm not trying again easy I know, Kerry or you're using those three letter agencies again, CIA, whatever you want to call it. But they mentioned that on the on the on this special. I believe it's on Netflix. I can't recall. I gotta look up what the name of it is here for the life of me. But they talk about how social media has really got us by the cajones I know now. I know. It's called The Social Dilemma and it was done in twenty twenty and basically, The Social Dilemma is a is a Netflix documentary directed by jeff Orlawski, that explores the negative impacts of social media, featuring interviews with tech insiders who reveal how platforms manipulate users for price, leading to issues like mental health decline, polarization, and the spread of misinformation. The film combines documentary footage with a fictional narrative about a family struggling with social media addiction, highlighting concerns about surveillance, capitalism, and the psychological effects of engagement based design. Yeah, it's called the Social Dilemma. And let me see if I can. Let's see here, hang on, let me see if I can. I'll put the trailer for it up on up on the podcast episode. I'll put the trailer up a link to the trailer in the podcast description for us, so we know where you know, well, I know where. I've already watched it, but you may want to check this out. I'll put the trailer up and you can see a preview of it, and it is on Netflix. But definitely will open your eyes. And I always knew that there was something odd about my own personal journey with that, and it just causes you to want to, you know, post and comment on things. I mean, and again, I'm not saying there's nothing wrong with a healthy online presence. Okay, there's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with you know, if a friend puts up, hey, you know, I went to this concert or this restaurant and oh my gosh, you know there's a dog lost in our town, or you know, healthy things like that, or even oh my gosh, did you hear about the weather or things. I think, though, I guess I feel that many of us, myself included, are getting drawn into the social political fighting on and on. I mean, look at how well, look at what it's done to our country. Okay, you've got left versus right at such a rage crescendo that I can't really ever recall in my lifetime or even my parents' lifetime. Yeah, okay, you can go back and you can cite the Vietnam War and the protests there, the civil rights movement. Yeah, I mean, yeah, there were those were social happenings going on that you know, they're definitely differing opinions on, you know, one side and the versus the other. However, that being said, I really firmly believe that we are just being pitted against each other, and there's certain segments of this society that are so rage filled because either their lives are empty and they want to find some type of way to fulfill that void. And I get it, I get it, But you're doing that under the auspices of your own mental health. There's around you as well, and it's just not a good thing. Hey, everybody, welcome back to the program. Welcome to wife's thoughts. This is kind of catchy, Mister Producer extraordinaire. I like it. It's got that zz top vibe. Man, I like it, but it's not a zazy top song. Okay, So please don't don't sue me or us or anybody. Stop suing people, stop being soletigious society. Today in the program, we are talking about not everything in life and especially social media needs your input. And that's what we're talking about. We were talking about the harsh and the incredible levels of hostility before the break, about how you know, people on social media are just lashing out and in public now too, they're just lashing out at each other. And I mean the violence leading to violence and even in some cases deaths of some people on all sides and harm. And you know, I gotta be honest. If I must be honest, I've been enraged by certain posts and things online. I have and in the beginning, Okay, in the beginning, I was lacking the what's the word I'm looking for, lacking the way or the desire, that's the word I'm looking for, lacking the desire to just do a little fact check, to look at some other sources. I was looking at that meme, or I was looking at that clip it, clip it clip I'm doing great today. Vernacular my vernacular wordings. I'll tell you. Oh, well, I was, you know, reluctant to go to other sources. I would just see the clip of a news story or you know. And and now in the age of AI, you know, you've got to You've got to be more forthright than ever to vet things being pushed at you, even on regular TVs. Some of the news sources have been caught ABC, NBC, CBS, all these sources you know, online cable channels have all you know, a lot, well a lot of them. I can't say for certainty all of them, but a good majority of them have been caught altering or fabric downright, fabricate, fabricating, fabricating. Boy, I hang on a sec I gotta get a drink of water. Hang on. There we go, fabricating and manipulating facts and telling half truths, leaving out, as Paul Harvey used to say, the rest of the story. So you have to be more judicious and more willing to vet sources and claims and things than ever. And I am. I am doing my part. I am really hunkering down and moving into the minutia of you know, I just don't take at a face value that meme, that social media meme or story or you know, oh this was on Twitter, or I'm sorry X now I keep I'm sorry, I still call it Twitter. It's just so ingrained. Elon Musk, if you're listening, just put it back to Twitter. Will you just put it back to Twitter? Anyway? You know, you've got to do that. And a lot of people don't. A lot of people, I don't care. They'll take that twenty second blurb or thirty second blurb or one minute blurb and they take it as gospel. There's a word for people like that that just absolutely refuse and are let around. They call it them. Are you already you've heard it? Sheep ole, sheep ol, the sheep bull. I know some, I'm sure you know some. They might be family members, friends, acquaintances, coworkers. I guess what I'm trying to implore to all of us, myself included. I'm not preaching to the choir, I'm preaching to all of us and myself as well, that we all need to take a step back. We all need to take a look at the information we're getting, how it's being delivered to us, what the endgame may or may not be from it, And most importantly, just take a deep breath and realize that everything going on every day does not need your opinion, your input. Just realize it, and I think we'll go. You know, we can get along a lot better if that was the case. I think we would. I mean community, getting out, talking to people in person, and just leave the garbage where it belongs at the curb or at the dump. Don't talk politics so much, talk about your community, talk about your family, talk about your friends, talk about the weather, talk about a movie you saw or a book you've read. I have spoken many times throughout the years on this pot podcast about taking a social media vacation. I've done it. I'm going to be doing it again soon. Now, you say to yourself, Wulterio, do we know you know the posts for podcast episodes will still be up in that But as far as engaging personally on social media as much, I do it I didn't really do it last year, and I should have. What I usually do is sometime around when the weather starts getting nice spring and the spring beginning of summertime, I'll take a week off from social media and stop posting on social media in a personal fashion and just automate the uh, you know we have at the studio here. We can automate the postings of you know, topics that are upcoming on the podcast, or of the podcast episodes, what have you, encouraging snippets and things of that nature. But I'll propose that to you. Why not take a break from social media? Try it. I've talked about it on past episodes of the White's Thoughts podcast. You can look it up at White Thoughts dot com or Purple Pit Studios. Take a social media vacation. And it wasn't easy the first time I did it, I'll be honest with you. I but I went in and I just went I went for it. I said, you know what, seven days, I'm going for it. Seven days. No, I'm not going to post on social media. I'm not going to go on Facebook, I'm not going to go on Twitter, I'm not going to go on Instagram. You know I'm not on TikTok, but everybody says, get on TikTok, get on TikTok, get on TikTok. I really don't have a desire trying that. And the first couple of days, honestly, I felt like I was going through withdraw social media withdrawal, because I'm like, Oh, I wonder what's happening on Facebook. I wonder what's happening on next you know, Twitter? You know, I wonder what's happening on the Insta, on the gram as I say, you know, snabchat, all these what's going on? What's going on? But by day I'm going to tell you something as sure as I'm sitting in this studio. By the third day, the third day, I started almost to feel like there was a weight lifted off my shoulders. I started sleeping better, I started feeling honestly more optimistic and less pissed off about a lot of things I really did. And by day six I was like, Wow, I feel great. And I don't think I ended up going back the first few times doing it until maybe the ninth, tenth or twelfth day. I just happened to pop on and then I was like okay, this one did that, that one did this? Oh, okay, give it a try. A social media vacation and removing political talk, especially political talk in this day and age here in twenty twenty six, from the conversation with family, friends and what have you, will go a long way. I firmly believe to enhance your mental health, your physical health, and overall well being because remember, not everything needs our opinion. Hey, thanks for listening to the program today. I truly appreciate each and every one of you out there, and remember to see a change in the world, you have to be the change in the world you want to see. It all starts with you, the person looking back at you in the mirror every morning. Remember to be kind to yourself, be kind to others. If you want to tweet at me on Twitter, it's at Terry Weiss.
