Every January first, we all show up to an audition. We're auditioning for the role of better version of ourselves. We bring the script, the new gym clothes, and the color coded planners. But here's the uncomfortable truth, my friends. By February, most of us have been fired from that role. Why Because the phrase new year knew you is a lie. It implies that the person you were on December thirty first was a beta version that needs to be deleted. We're going to talk about this this time on Why's Thoughts. The following program is a Studios production. Hey everybody, welcome back. Welcome to another installment of White's Thoughts. I'm Terry Weiss, your humbled host. I'm so glad you've decided that spend some of your valuable time with me today on the program. And you know what, If you're enjoying Waste Thoughts, stop by our website Weis's Thoughts dot com willa. Is universal to all of us. I would feel. We're gonna talk about the new you. Hey, everybody, welcome to the program, Welcome to Weis's thoughts. I am Terry Weiss, and I'm so glad that you are here joining us today on the podcast. Bear with me. If I sound a little different, a little easily, it's because I'm fighting a cold. So I've got a little bit of a H two O here by me, and I do apologize. I am fighting a little bit of the upper respiratory thing with the cold here. You know, it never fails. Last year, you know, I had COVID right after right after New Year's. This year, I get a cold, but oh well, hey, it is what it is. It is how it is, right, So anyway, I hope you had a great New Year's, a safe New Year's, fun new Year's. Excuse me, a. A meaningful New Year's. And today we're going to dismantle on the program, the New You industrial complex. What we're going to talk about is why your resolutions, resolutions usually fail. We all make them. We all make those New Year's resolutions or course corrections, adjustments, and why evolution is better than an overhaul, and how to actually make twenty twenty six the year you stop running away from yourself and start walking toward who you actually want to be. All right, so let's let's do that, shall we. Now we're going to get right into it. There's a psychological phenomenon called the fresh start effect. It's the energy that we feel at the beginning of a new week, a new month, and new year, sometimes even as often as a new day. It's a powerful wind in our sales. But wind eventually does die down. I mean, let's be honest. The problem isn't your ambition or mind, ambition, or anyone's ambition. It's the narrative. When we say new Year, New you, we create an identity gap. We try to bridge the distance between who we are someone who likes let's say, pizza and hits snooze, and who we want to be, someone who runs five k's and drinks green juice overnight. And it just doesn't work. That way. Think about this. You cannot build a new you on a foundation of hating the old you. Let me say that again. You cannot build a new you on a foundation of hating the old you. It's a powerful statement. Let that one sink in. If your goals come from a place of I'm not good enough, they will always feel like a chore. However, if they come from a place of I want to see what I'm capable of, then they feel like an adventure. Think about that. You don't want to come from a place of self loathing looking at me, Oh my god, I got those fifty pounds, I'm a fat slob there? Eh, no, you got You know, a more productive way it might be, you know what, I don't feel my best, I don't look my best. What can I do? What are steps I can take to feel better, to look better, to just overall maybe improve my health in the coming weeks months. Because remember, if your goals come from a place of I'm not good enough, they will always feel like a chore. But if they come from a place of I want to see what I'm capable of, it's going to feel like an adventure. So try this, Try this strategy, This is something I found called the one percent pivot. Instead of a one hundred and eighty degree turn, think about it as a one degree shift. Here's an example. If a plane flying from New York to Los Angeles shifts its heading by just three point five degrees, it will end up in Mexico. You don't need a new identity, you just need a new direction. Reflect on this for a second. Here, think about this one. What is one old you habit that actually served you well in the last year. Let me say that again, what is one old you habit that actually may have served you well this past year? And why are we so quick to throw out the baby with the bathwater, as they say? Think about that. So let's let's take a look at the word best. Usually we define best year, yet by addition like more money, more followers, more muscle, more productivity, what have you. But what if twenty twenty six becomes your best year through subtraction? Let me explain what I mean the stop doing list we all have, Okay, we all have a to do list, but the most successful people I know have what's called a stop doing list. For example, stop saying yes to coffee dates that drain your energy, stop checking your phone the nanosecond you open your eyes, give yourself five minutes. Believe me, it makes a difference. I've started doing this because I was becoming addicted to the phone. Oh what was posted on social media? Overnight? I checked my email. Give yourself five minutes, open your eyes, relax, do some breathing. This I found already has been so beneficial in my life. Stop apologizing for taking up space in a room. The internal metric shift. To make this your best year, you have to change your scoreboard. If your scoreboard is external likes bank balance weight, you are giving the world the remote control to your happiness. Try an internal metric instead. Here's an example. How many days this week did I feel aligned? What do you mean? Terry alignment? Is that feeling where your actions match your values, even if you had a hard day at work or hard day at home, if you stayed true to your integrity. My friends, that's a win, such a big, huge win. Now, let's let's do this. Let's talk about three ideas to build your year. Let's let's dive into this. If you want to make this year actually different, I want to offer you three practical, slightly uncondemned unconventional things and frameworks to try. We're going to do that. Fuel your thoughts and save today. Wearing his sunglasses and doors just because he wants to let's get back to the program. Here's your host, Terry Weiss. Hey, everybody, welcome back to the podcast. Welcome to Wife's Thoughts. I'm Terry Weiss. I'm so glad you're here. The first show of the new year, and we're talking about new resolutions, fresh starts, the evolution lab, redefining things. Okay, and before we took a quick break there, we were talking about an internal metric shift to make this your best year. All right, So we're going to talk about three ideas to build your year on. So if you want to make this year actually feel different, if I want to offer you three practical, slightly unconventional frameworks. Number one, pick a theme, not a goal. What do you mean? Goals are binary? You either win or you lose, all right, I mean it's pretty much that simple. A theme is a north star. If your theme is boldness, then every time you're faced with a choice, you ask what is the bold choice? Here? It's a filter for your life, not a box to check. The second thing, rule of one. The rule of one. We over commit in January. We try to change our diet, our sleep, and our career all at once. Try the rule of one. Change one thing for ninety days, Just one thing for ninety days. Once that new u behavior becomes regular to you, well then and only then you add the next thing. Makes it a little easier. Huh. Number three, Environment design over willpower. Listen to this one. Willpower is a finite battery. It runs out by four pm. If you want to eat better, don't try to be stronger in the pantry. Change what's in the pantry. If you want to write more, put your laptop on your pillow in the morning. Stop fighting your environment and start designing it. Think about that. Little things we can do pretty simple. Huh. So as we wrap up this episode, I want to leave you with a thought. You don't owe anyone a new you. You don't owe the internet a transformation photo. You don't owe your family a higher tax bracket. The only thing that you owe yourself is presence. The best year yet isn't a destination you reach in December. It's a series of small, intentional moments that happen on a random Tuesday in March. It's choosing yourself over and over again, even when you mess up, especially when you mess up. So here is your permission. Slip My friends, be the same you, but just more intentional. This is the evolution lab. Of the new You. I'm Terry Weiss. Thanks for listening to Wise's Thoughts. We'll see you in the next one. Hey, thanks for listening to the program today. I truly appreciate each and every one of you out there, and remember to see a change in the world, you have to be the change in the world you want to see.
