Welcome to Think on This. Each episode of Thinking on This provides you practical advice that you can use daily. Give us five minutes and will change your world. Now, let's get ready to think on this. Hello, and welcome to another episode of Think on This, the podcast where we take a few minutes out of our busy lives to pause, breathe, and reflect on a single idea. I'm your host, and I'm so glad you've joined me today. Today I'm looking at an image sent in by a listener. It's a beautiful, soft sunset, pink oranges and purples swirling in the clouds and across that sky. Are these words? One day at a time is all we should be dealing with. We can't go back to yesterday, and we can't control tomorrow. So let's be thankful for the gift of today. Take a second to let that sink in. Today we're talking about the art of being present. Most of us carry a heavy backpack through life. Inside that backpack are all the things from yesterday, the mistakes we made, the conversations we wish we'd handled differently, the what ifs. But the quote is right, we can't go back yesterday is a closed book. When we spend our energy ruminating on the past, we're essentially trying to drive a car while looking exclusively in the rear view mirror. It's exhausting and eventually it causes us to crash. If you're holding on to regret today, I want you to try something, acknowledge it, learn the lesson it taught you, and then give yourself permission to leave it and yesterday it doesn't belong in your today. On the other side of the coin, we have tomorrow. If yesterday is a wait, tomorrow is a fog. We try to peer into it. We try to control it, try to plan for every possible catastrophe. Anxiety is often just living in the future without any of the tools to actually fix it. Yet we worry about bills that haven't arrived, health issues that haven't happened, or problems that might never exist. The quote reminds us we can't control tomorrow. We can prepare, sure, but we can't live there. Yet, when we obsess over the future, we're essentially stealing the peace from our present moment to pay for a debt that isn't even due. So what are we left with? We're left with now one day at a time. Sounds simple. It's almost a cliche, but it is a radical way to live. When you focus only on the next twenty four hours, or even just the next hour, the world becomes manageable. Today is a gift, that's why we call it a present. Be thankful for today. It's all we really have. Thanks for listening to think on this. If this message resonated with you, share it with someone who might need a reminder to breathe today until next time.
