Life has a funny way of reminding us who's in control—and it’s rarely us. One minute, everything seems stable, predictable, and on track. The next, a single phone call, a difficult conversation, or an unexpected email can change everything in the blink of an eye.

I recently had a conversation with a close friend who experienced this firsthand. They were blindsided when they lost their job without warning. The news was a gut punch, turning their world upside down instantly. It was a harsh reminder that no matter how secure we think we are, circumstances can shift in a millisecond.

It's easy to get lost in the shock and frustration. When life kicks you in the teeth, the natural reaction is to take it personally. We start to question our worth, our decisions, and our path forward. We replay every conversation, every choice, and every moment leading up to the change, trying to find a reason or someone to blame.

But my conversation with my friend reminded me of a crucial truth: sometimes, things just happen. Life is not always fair, and it’s not always personal. A company's restructuring, an unexpected health issue, or a natural disaster doesn't care about our plans or our feelings. It simply changes the rules.

So, how do we move forward? How do we find the courage to carry on when the ground beneath our feet feels like it's crumbling?

First, allow yourself to feel the emotions. It’s okay to be angry, sad, or scared. Acknowledging the pain is the first step toward healing. But don't unpack and live there. Once you've processed the initial shock, it's time to shift your perspective.

Remember that your value isn't tied to your job title, your relationship status, or your financial situation. Your worth is inherent. It comes from who you are, not what you have or what you do.

Next, focus on what you can control. You can’t control the past, but you can control your response to the present. Take a moment to breathe, reassess your priorities, and make a plan. What's the next step, no matter how small? Maybe it's updating your resume, reaching out to your network, or simply spending a day with loved ones to recharge.

In the end, life is a series of unexpected twists and turns. The key is not to avoid the storms, but to learn how to sail through them. When things change in the blink of an eye, let it be a reminder of your resilience and strength. You have the power to carry on, to adapt, and to build something new, even if it wasn't what you originally planned.
